Video: Beijing Street Food Series – Shandong Big Jianbing 山东大煎饼
Mar 25th
Watch the same video on YouTube here.
This is the second in a video series of people making my favorite common Beijing street dishes. I hope that this can provide an insight into Beijing food culture for people who don’t live here. The first one is here.
This is of Shandong Big Jianbing, which comes from Shandong Province. Shandong Big Jianbing is pretty rare in Beijing but its spinning wok that Beijing-style jianbing lacks makes it a better video candidate. The two videos above have the same content but are from different sites, one from YouTube and the other from Youku.
Video: Beijing Street Food Series – Stir-fried Bing 炒饼
Mar 19th
Watch the same video on YouTube here.
I’m starting a video series of people making my favorite common Beijing street dishes. I hope that this can provide an insight into Beijing food culture for people who don’t live here.
This video is of people at an outdoor restaurant near where I live making the common Beijing dish stir-fried bing, 炒饼 in Simplified Chinese. This restaurant makes it better than any place I know. It’s hard to translate “bing”, but it’s something like dough or batter that’s in a lot of simple Beijing dishes. In this video, it’s the last ingredient they add. Here they are making a double batch, one for me and one for another customer. The two videos above have the same content but are from different sites, one from YouTube and the other from Youku.

Jumpstart Your PR Career on April 3 in Seattle
Mar 11th
My favorite public relations event I went to in college was Public Relations Career Jumpstart, hosted in Seattle every year by the Puget Sound PRSA Chapter. PR Jumpstart 2010 is coming up soon, and if you’re a student or recent graduate looking to work in public relations and within driving distance of Seattle, you should definitely go. It’s on Saturday, April 3, at Seattle University.
Register at a discounted rate here before March 30.
This event is the most beneficial if you want to work in Seattle, but the stellar programming on job interviewing and public relations topics are a must-attend for people aspiring to work in public relations anywhere.
I especially recommend PR Jumpstart if you’re looking to network on behalf of your PRSSA Chapter. My 2008 PRSSA Regional Activity committee found both our keynote speaker, Kyle Warnick of Microsoft, and title sponsor, Owen Media, at PR Jumpstart 2008.
Photos: Quintessential Chinese New Year Post
Mar 10th
I spent the first few days of Chinese New Year at my friend’s grandparents’ house in a village close to the Stone Forest in Yunnan, China. These photos document our New Year’s Eve festivities. I didn’t find out until after the New Year that this family is Yi Minority, which means that they celebrate a little differently than what I learned in Chinese class is typical. (Note the lack of 饺子 jiaozi.)
My friend’s grandmother made this paste from scratch for the decorations (below).
On the ground are remnants of the massive strip of firecrackers we set off the night before.
