Photos: Quintessential Chinese New Year Post

I spent the first few days of Chinese New Year at my friend’s grandparents’ house in a village close to the Stone Forest in Yunnan, China. These photos document our New Year’s Eve festivities. I didn’t find out until after the New Year that this family is Yi Minority, which means that they celebrate a little differently than what I learned in Chinese class is typical. (Note the lack of 饺子 jiaozi.)
My friend’s grandmother made this paste from scratch for the decorations (below).
On the ground are remnants of the massive strip of firecrackers we set off the night before.
